I was really excited about reading this one. I had been listening to the ones before it on audio, having never read any, and really enjoyed them. So maybe I would have enjoyed this if I’d had the reader reading it to me instead of having to physically read it.

So, this starts off with all the Supes coming out and revealing themselves. Not surprising, that’s been coming for a while. Right after, Sam’s informed that his mother, also a Supe, has been shot by her husband, his stepfather, after she revealed by transforming in front of him and scaring the crap out of him. I’d probably shoot someone too if they did that. Anyway, he takes off to take care of his mom leaving Sookie in charge of the bar. Oh, and Arlene quits after finding out what Sam is, since she’s become a…racist? towards supernatural creatures. I’m not really down with either plot.

The Sam plot felt shoved in just so Sookie could run the bar and find the body that turns up later. The Arlene plot has been building for a few books but at the same time, it feels like Harris just got sick of the character and instead of killing her, decided to completely change her personality so the readers would dislike her. So, she does something really bad in this book. She and her FotS cronies attempt to take out Sookie. Which again just kinda felt meh.

Oh and Sookie’s cheating sister in law Crystal ends up murdered and hung up on a cross in front of the bar. As often as people get killed and left at that bar, you can bet I wouldn’t go there. And Jason’s random new friend Mel had something to do with it and is gay and hot for Jason – both of which I guessed and aren’t very well hidden but of course Sookie’s the only one to know.

And there’s a Fairy war during which Claudine is killed off screen right after revealing she’s going to have a baby. I liked Claudine alot so that annoys me both because she’s killed and because it’s just mentioned in a few sentences. Why even have her be pregnant in this book alone if you were going to kill her, Charlaine? Ug.

Oh yeah, and Sookie and Eric sleep together. Whatever.

I don’t think I liked this book. It was a bit of a let down and most of the stuff that was supposed to be shocking was easily guessed and it felt like nothing really got accomplished.
