I’ve never really gotten into zombie movies which is weird because I do consider myself a pretty large fan of horror movies. The only “zombie” movies I’ve seen are the 28 Days/Weeks Later movies – and the true zombie horror movie fans will argue until they turn blue those aren’t true zombie movies for various reasons.
So at the suggestion of another horror film lovin’ co-worker, and since both this and the remake are available for instant watch on Netflix, I watched this.
I chose the original…for some reason. I’m glad I did. It’s in black and white and some how that kinda adds to the scary feel throughout the movie. The zombies aren’t rotting flesh variety and only have minimal makeup (this movie had a tiny, tiny budget) but it comes off looking really good. The music is atmospheric and I might try to hunt down the score.
And the ending. Since the movie is 30 year old, I’m gonna spoil it. I LIKE that it’s not a happy ending. Our “heroes” (if they can even be called that, not a one’s really heroic except to some extent Ben for coming up with plans but his plans ended up not being so great so…) ALL end up dead. It looks like Ben might make it out and BOOM, he’s shot in the head by the zombie hunters making the assumption he’s a zombie after surviving the whole night. Now that, Alanis, is ironic.
Is it weird of me I found Barbara’s brother to be pretty hot after he became a zombie? Yes? Well, I never claimed to be normal.
