A rare case of "watch the remake instead".

I’d tried watching this another time, about when the remake was coming out, and got bored. The begining is great then it kind of drifts off into a (boring) episode of “Law and Order” and for the last 10 minutes picks back up as a horror movie again. I actually prefer the remake.

And also was distracted by: is the soundtrack what they used as the “THC Surround Sound” sound that builds up? It sounds EXACTLY the same.

Death has some dumb ass plans.

Kept me entertained but only barely. I think I spent most of the movie rolling my eyes at the “clever” deaths. The movie was originally filmed to be 3D and I think still was had I had some glasses but the story proceeded as though the plot was wrote around how to make things look good in 3D not here’s the story and we can make this scene 3D.

The 2 main couple was likable though. I didn’t give a crap about their friends but the token black guy, a security guard they saved and therefore part of death’s plan was sympathetic also.

And there was a quick throwaway line from a newscaster that lead me to believe the story was supposedly set in the city I work in which is cool…except everything about it was completely wrong, a common occurrence I’ve noticed when a story is set there (it’s happened 1 or 2 other times) since it is a big enough city it might have been heard of but small enough the general public isn’t going to know jack about it. Dear writers: the majority of us aren’t hicks or racist. It’s Indiana for god’s sakes, not the deep south.

There were a couple nods to the first 1 or 2 movies if you’ve seen them a fan might appreciate too. All in all, ok for a view but don’t buy it.

Lightning girl Harper finds more bodies and bangs her step-brother some more. It sounds more interesting and scandalous than it reads.

I’ve read the previous 3 in this series about a woman named Harper who was struck by lightning as a teen and lived and after had the ability to sense dead bodies when hidden and know their cause of death when in their proximity. She and her step-brother cum luvah travel the US using this talent to solve mysteries.

This wasn’t my favorite. It read like Harris got bored and eager to wrap up this series about 2/3 through and just started making random shit up, regardless of whether it fit or made any sense. The killer/killers of both the mystery of the missing baby and Harper’s missing sister (a running thread through all the books) made little sense. In fact, they intersect! A crime that took place 8 years prior in Harper’s personal life just happens to cross her path via a different crime related to 1 of her readings. Whatever.

The last few paragraphs was an obvious tack-on so Harris doesn’t have to worry about future books. Harper and Tolliver got married, settled back into their apartment for a rest but worry not, she’ll find all those bodies out there. At least she does find the body of her missing sister finally.

Even if Harris does change her mind and decide to expand this series, after this one, I’m not sure I’ll read it. But maybe I’m just bitter because I stayed up late finishing the book because it was due back the next day and I wasn’t really blown away by the end.

It’s not bad per say, it’s just not good. It kinda meanders. And all the characters I care about end up dead so it’s hard to feel good at the end. In fact, I’m not quite sure what happened at the end.

Don’t recommend. Although there’s lots of blood if that’s your thing.

Oh look, it's Izzie. Or Izzy. Or the pregnant chick from "Knocked Up". Who the fuck cares.

First off, I have had this from Netflix since November. November. I just couldn’t get in the mood to watch it. I’m not a huge Katherine Heigel fan anyway. I mean, I don’t hate her but she tends to play characters I find shrill and unrelatable.

Her character in this was no exception. She’s shrill, controlling, annoying, pushy, bitchy, and pretty much a basket-case. We’re told she’s smart but every chance she negates that by acting like a buffoon, usually having to do with her “hot” next door neighbor, who she thinks is the perfect man.

Enter Mike, a chauvinist who is being added to her morning show (I don’t even remember the character’s name! Maybe I should just call her Izzie. Or Izzy. Either one because other than 1 being an alien and the other a murdering doctor who can’t follow protocol, they’re the same and they’re THIS woman! So is her character from “Knocked Up” actually.) Anyway, he’s a pig but he’s pretty good looking and since this movie is 1 huge cliche, of course he has a sweet heart under the rough exterior. And of course, he falls for her while helping her land the next door neighbor. And after several mix-ups and misunderstandings, they end up together. Because this movie is 1 sloppy cliche.

I should have just sent it back.

Early 90's attempt at showing technology that just looks pathetic now.

This is one of those movies I watch every so often when I’m bored. It’s been a few years – and man does it not age well! Especially if you know a bit about computers this movie will drive you nuts!

So Sandra Bullock is Angela Bennett, a computer programing guru who works from home and seems to have some sort of issue meeting people face to face and basically lives as a hermit. We see early use of the internet, although I really don’t remember the internet ever being like it is in this. I’m no hacker but much of what we see the characters do computer wise looks largely suspect and it kinda bugged me this time around viewing. And on that same vein, I HATE when characters are typing on a computer and fucking talk about loud what they’re typing! Who does that? Drives me insane!

Anywho, Angela is sent some shitty looking (well, it’s ok for the time I guess) computer game that has, what we’re told, a virus somehow put there by this cyber-terrorist group. My question – why/how did it get there in the first place? Because said group spends the whole movie trying to get the disk back. So this “virus” allows someone with the know-how to access info they shouldn’t be – FBI files, government files, that sort of thing. So they steal Angela’s identity while she’s on vacation and make her life a living hell trying to get back the disk, which is destroyed early on anyway so I don’t know what they wanted from her.

Basically, you have to turn off any knowledge you have of technology at all while watching this or it will bother you. I used to really enjoy it but this viewing drove me nuts.

Murders following the 7 deadly sins.

Despite being a fan of both horror and crime/mystery, I’ve never seen this thriller. So since Netflix jumped down my list and sent it, I now have.

I didn’t like it as much as I would have thought.

The idea of someone murdering following the 7 deadly sins in interesting although at the back of my mind, based on what Criminal Minds, CSI, Law and Order, and various thrillers have told me, I kept wondering why no one questioned the likelihood that the killer wouldn’t stop after 7 murders. I suppose it could be said the end of the movie takes care of that since he had a plan to get himself off – but shouldn’t one of the detectives at least have questioned that?

I have a soft spot for Leland Orser, who played “Crazed Man in Massage Parlour” and was on the screen for all of 2 minutes, so I liked that. The rest was just kinda meh for me and not as amazing as many told me. I was a little let down.

A very well acted but boring movie.

I usually don’t care much for movies that win a bunch of awards. I tend to find them boring and/or pretentious. For the most part, this was no exception.

Hoffman plays a priest at an elementary school where Streep’s a tough as nails and sometimes cruel principal/nun. Amy Adams is an innocent, kind nun/teacher. Things happen involving the school’s first black student leading Streep to accuse the priest of molesting him…I think. They never come out and say ANYTHING, just dance around it, which is one of the things that bugged me.

In one scene the principal is talking to the boy’s mother, telling her what she believes. The mother says he’ll just have to endure it, more or less because he needs to graduate from that school for good high school options. This is taking place back in the late 50’s so her state of mind isn’t as cold as it sounds. She goes on to say something that leads me to believe that the boy might be gay? And his father hates him because of that and beats him. But that’s not clear either because that dance around it as well.

The movie ends with the principal more or less blackmailing the priest into transferring. He never admits to wrongdoing and in fact keeps insisting he’s innocent. But it’s not completely clear. There’s…doubt.

A man tells his daughter the story of the 3 women he loved when he was younger, allowing her to guess which one is her mother.

I actually watched this about a week ago and sent it back to Netflix. But my internet (love you SO MUCH DTN Speednet! Wish DSL or any other form of high-speed was available in my area! But I digress…) decided it should stop working for about a week.

I thought it was pretty cute. It went both exactly how I thought it would and not at all if that makes sense. It of course has a cute, happy ending – it IS a Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy after all. But I expected that while he was telling his daughter the story of the women he’s loved, allowing her to try to guess which one was her mother, whom he’s on the brink of divorce with, he’d realize he still loved her and they’d patch things up.

That doesn’t happen. And I’m glad because it’d be very…80’s. That crap doesn’t really happen. He kinda sorta ends up with the girl he kept missing. She loved him when he was with someone else, he loved her when she was. They wouldn’t talk for years at a time. We don’t get an official “they’re together” but are left with the understanding that they’re going to get to know each other again. And it helped she was played by Isla “Ms. Borat” Fisher who I’ve loved since I saw her in “Confessions of a Shopaholic”. She’s just so cute and quirky.

The other options were played by Rachel Weiss who for some reason I’ve never really cared for. I can’t figure out why. She seems like a perfectly nice person. And Elizabeth Banks who I’ve only seen as the evil-ish step-mother to be in the movie “The Uninvited”.

And both women – the character’s they’re playing – are kinda horrid at times. So it’s kinda hard to root for either of them. I was surprised one of them was in fact the mother. I got a laugh when the daughter commented that if she was the child of Summer (Rachel Weiss’ character) she’d run away to Canada, the character is that horrid.

So, yeah, cute watch. I’ll never buy it but I enjoyed it for what it was. The timeline thing kinda bugged but luckily for the writters I’m not good with math so they could be flexible with the years.

A pale white ghost chick with wild black hair always in her face and yucky eyes running around murdering people. Why does that sound familar?

Netflix claimed it was a detective thriller/murder mystery but honestly, it was yet another ghost story in the vein of The Grudge or Ringu. Ghost haunting a specific area and murdering the men who did her wrong – in this case raped and brought about her murder when someone covered it all up. And she got pregnant as result so she’s often in the company of a ghost child. Oh, and there’s even an email that gets sent to all of her victims before she does them in. Original.

There’s also the 2 detectives on the case whose names I don’t remember – and I just watched the movie if that tells you anything. The woman was raped at some point and we keep getting back story into that. The the man detective is her new partner who seems pretty klutzy according to the other detectives. I didn’t see it but since they told us, the viewer, that he is, I guess we’ll just have to believe them. He also ends up having secrets and backstorys of his own.

I was bored watching this. To similar to other recent Asian horror movies and to easy to guess. Blah. Maybe I’m just mad because I was supposed to be getting the new Friday the 13th but Netflix decided to skip down the list and send this treasure instead.
